## Selection process

1. **Prelims:** two objective papers of 200 marks each. Paper 1 (GS, 150 questions) decides the shortlist; Paper 2 (CSAT, 100 questions) is qualifying at 33%. About **15 times** the number of vacancies go to Mains.

The final merit list adds Mains and Interview marks. Prelims marks are not counted. The paper-by-paper structure is in [UPPCS exam pattern 2026](/blog/uppcs-exam-pattern-2026).

## Pay scale

The advertisement gives pay in the old 6th Pay Commission format: Pay Band INR 9,300-34,800 with Grade Pay INR 4,600 (INR 4,200 for Naib Tehsildar) up to Pay Band INR 15,600-39,100 with Grade Pay INR 5,400. Under the 7th Pay Commission, these map to:

| 6th CPC grade pay | 7th CPC pay level | Starting basic pay | Example posts |
| :--- | :--- | ---: | :--- |
| INR 4,200 | Level 6 | INR 35,400 | Naib Tehsildar |
| INR 4,600 | Level 7 | INR 44,900 | Many district-level officer posts |
| INR 5,400 (PB-3) | Level 10 | INR 56,100 | Deputy Collector, DSP |

The advertisement gives the range, not the scale of each post; the post-specific pay is set by each service's rules. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances are paid on top of basic pay.

## Three rules worth knowing in 2026

- **Chief Minister Fellowship weightage.** Under new rules made in 2026, research scholars who have completed the Chief Minister Fellowship Programme get extra marks in Mains. For an exam with more than 1,000 Mains marks, that is 2.5 marks for one year, 5 for two years and 7.5 for three or more years. They also get one year of upper-age relaxation for each year of fellowship, up to three years. The completion certificate must be obtained by the last date of application.
- **Minimum standard.** Candidates must score at least 40% (35% for SC and ST) in Prelims and in Mains to be placed on the merit list.
- **Migration to unreserved seats.** The advertisement says reserved-category candidates who took a concession at Prelims or Mains will not be adjusted against unreserved seats. The Allahabad High Court (Lucknow Bench) stayed this point on 13 May 2026, and the advertisement notes the stay.

## How the application worked

The application was online and based on One Time Registration (OTR). Candidates first got an OTR number from [otr.pariksha.nic.in](https://otr.pariksha.nic.in), then applied on uppsc.up.nic.in. Personal details came from the OTR record, so any error had to be fixed in the OTR. If you applied, keep the application printout and fee receipt. You will need to send attested copies of all marksheets and certificates with the Mains application.
