Premier generalist cadre. No IPS-style height norms, but Central Standing Medical Board must certify fitness for continuous administrative duty. IAS eligibility covers age, attempts, and medical detail.
Indian Police Service (IPS)
Strictest physical standards in CSE. Men (General) typically need 165 cm height; women 150 cm; chest expansion norms for men. Eye standards require 6/6 or 6/9 in the better eye. Indian Foreign Service (IFS)
Diplomatic cadre sharing CSE stages. Medical fitness for foreign postings, language training, and outdoor exercises at academy. Indian Revenue Service — Income Tax (IRS)

PwBD reservation is 4% horizontal across categories. Each service publishes which disability sub-types may opt in:

Category reservation across services

DAF preference strategy
- List genuine preference order—not aspirational ranking.
- Remove services you fail nationality or medical bars for.
- Re-read notification Appendix on physical standards before DAF-I.
- Account for training location, cadre life, and promotion path—eligibility is only the first filter.
- Keep at least one medically realistic high preference if IPS/IFS standards are borderline.
Medical examination pipeline (post-Mains)

Group B services and allied exams
Beyond headline Group A services, CSE allocates posts like Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli Civil Service (DANICS), Pondicherry Civil Service, and Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Service through the same merit list. Medical standards are generally lighter than IPS. Some posts require specific language knowledge or regional familiarity—eligibility is still degree + age + nationality, but posting realities differ.
Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandant) uses a separate CAPF notification, not CSE Mains. Do not confuse CAPF physical tests with CSE IPS standards when planning exam calendar.

Can I list IPS first and IAS second if I meet height standards barely?
You may, but borderline candidates risk temporary unfitness at medical boards. Many keep IAS above IPS when measurements are near cutoffs.
Does IFoS use the same DAF as IAS?
IFoS is opted through a separate choice in application/DAF with its own Mains papers. Same Prelims day, different Mains track. Science/engineering eligibility rules apply per IFoS notification.
Are Group B services easier on medical standards?
Generally yes—many Group B posts lack IPS-style physical norms. Nationality and degree rules still apply.
If unfit for IPS, am I automatically considered for IAS?
