The portal has four layers. Only the middle one is the one-time URN edit.

Before the URN is generated you may revise the three Universal Registration profiles any number of times. What you can change in the one-time edit
Path: log in at upsconline.nic.in → Update My Data → Update URN → review the preview → accept the mandatory declaration → edit the three modules → Preview → Lock and Submit.

Previously uploaded supporting documents stay on the profile; the official FAQ says they are not deleted when you edit.
Field-by-field greying on screen can depend on how data was fetched (for example after Aadhaar e-KYC). Treat the live form as final for your account, and only change what you can support with certificates.
What stays locked (and what the edit will not fix)

So the safe sequence is: correct URN → Lock and Submit → only then lock CAF and pay for ESE, CSE, or any other exam. Opening Update URN, wandering off without locking, leaves you unable to apply until the URN is locked again. Opening the page and closing without saving does not consume the facility.
Why this matters for ESE (and other non-CSE exams)
ESE uses the same Account → URN → CAF → Exam module stack as CSE. The Engineering Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2027 row in the official calendar lists notification 16 September 2026, last date for applications 6 October 2026, and Prelims on 31 January 2027.
Treat the ESE 2026 notice language carefully: it stresses that no addition, deletion, or changes are allowed in URN, CAF, and the exam-specific form once submitted for that examination, and it does not reprint the CSE/CAPF “one-time facility” note. Practical takeaway for ESE aspirants — fix Identity, Photo ID, and Matriculation on the URN before you lock CAF and submit the engineering application. Do not plan on a post-submit rewrite for that cycle. Carry the same Photo ID you declared in the URN to the examination hall. Keep URN and the per-exam Application Number for every communication with the Commission.

- Spending the one-time edit on a non-essential tweak — after Lock and Submit, the FAQ answer is simply “No” to a second edit.
- Editing Name, DoB, or gender late at night before a fee deadline — Photo ID clears; you must re-verify before you can finish.
- Expecting the URN fix to rewrite a form you already submitted — notifications say the opposite.
- Leaving the URN unlocked after starting corrections — you cannot apply for any examination until you Lock and Submit again.

Can I edit the URN more than once?
No. The Commission’s one-time edit FAQ states that once you use Update URN and complete the process, further URN edits are not allowed. Opening the page and logging out without saving does not count as using the facility.
