Global warming is the long-term rise in Earth’s average surface temperature driven mainly by greenhouse gas accumulation; climate change is the broader shift in climate patterns including altered precipitation, extreme weather events, sea-level rise, ocean acidification, and ecosystem disruption. IPCC reports treat warming as a measurable trend (°C since pre-industrial, currently ~1.1°C); climate change is the umbrella term for impacts, attribution science, and regional vulnerability assessments in Working Groups I–III.
