El Niño is the warm phase of ENSO when sea-surface temperatures rise abnormally in the central-eastern equatorial Pacific and trade winds weaken. La Niña is the cool phase when the eastern Pacific cools, trade winds strengthen, and warm water piles up further in the western Pacific.
Under normal conditions, warm water piles up in the western Pacific near Indonesia and Australia, while cold water upwells off Peru. El Niño disrupts that pattern — the warm pool shifts east. La Niña is the exaggerated “normal” — even more warm water in the west and stronger trade winds.
