Until 2022, a candidate could park 400 Mains marks in an academic optional. From 2023 those 400 marks test UP history, culture, polity, economy, and geography. 2023 is the baseline year for that syllabus in live papers.

Why the 2023 Mains papers matter
GS 1–4 did not disappear. They still total 800 marks. What changed is the optional slot. If your notes are UPSC-shaped, 2023 is where that preparation is incomplete: there is now a 400-mark UP paper pair with no UPSC twin.
GS Paper 5 (forenoon, 29 September) maps to UP history and civilization, ancient cities, architecture and archaeology, UP in 1857 and the freedom struggle, folk culture and dialects, the state political system, local self-government, law and order, and UP current affairs.
GS Paper 6 (afternoon, 29 September) maps to UP economy, geography, demography, agriculture, energy, industry, trade, forests, environment, and natural resources.
Because 2023 was year one, some questions test whether candidates had any UP notes at all. 2024 GS 5–6 shows what the Commission asked once the pattern was no longer a surprise. Tag both years onto one UP syllabus sheet; do not keep two separate piles.
2022 still helps for Hindi, Essay, and GS 1–4. It cannot substitute GS 5–6 practice.
